Mapping ethanol's progress

May 20, 2009 – Washington – Ever wondered where the nation’s 2,000 plus E85 stations are located? Curious as to how that matches up with ethanol biorefinery locations and other alternative fuel outlets? Thanks to the work of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), all those questions and more can be answered with NREL’s new online interactive map.

Using data provided in part by the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), this new tool plots the location every E85 station and ethanol biorefinery across the country (as well as under construction facilities). NREL’s map also includes locations for propane, hydrogen, and other alternative fueling facilities across the country.

“This exciting new tool will help policy makers and consumers alike gain a better appreciation of not only where to buy ethanol, but just how important the industry has become across the country,” said Renewable Fuels Association's Director of Market Development, Robert White. “The map clearly shows that ethanol is expanding beyond the traditional markets of the Midwest. This expansion of the ethanol industry is allowing small communities all across the U.S. to benefit from the new jobs and economic opportunities the production of renewable fuels offers. As the industry expands into the future with the development of new technologies, tools like this map will allow the public to become more familiar with renewable fuels and all the benefits they offer.”

The RFA is pleased to be a partner in this effort with NREL, providing updated E85 and biorefinery locations information as it becomes available.
